When Violet woke up the following morning, sunlight was shining weakly through the dusty windows. It was early. She stretched, her joints popping from a night on the thin blanket. Everyone else was still sleeping soundly. Anna was even more beautiful when she was asleep, if that were even possible, and Violet tried not to hate her for it.

You can’t hate someone for being beautiful; that’s ridiculous.

It was ridiculous, totally ridiculous. But as Violet got up and walked past the pair of them, she had a flighting desire to chop off Anna’s beautiful brown locks and see if she was still quite so pretty with a shaved head.

She sighed. It wasn’t Anna’s fault she was flawless while Violet herself often looked as though she’d been dragged through a hedge. Backward. In the rain. By a bear.

She decided to go and find a bathroom, carefully unblocking the door and stepping out into the silent hallway. No sign of the dead at least. She spotted the bathroom just past the stairs leading down to the entrance and padded toward it.

It was basic, but clean, with a large tin bath in the corner of the room. Violet supposed the previous residents had bathed and washed their clothes there. Walking to the row of sinks along the wall, she decided to risk a glance in the mirror.

Zompocalypse-chic was not Violet’s look. Her hair had, as usual, mostly worked loose from her braid. It hung in tangles and smelled more than a little of mildew, thanks to a night on the old blanket. She had dark circles under her gray eyes, and though she was used to her skin being incredibly pale due to infection, this morning she looked even more like a walking corpse. And that was only half true.

She ran the tap on the off chance and was surprised to find water still in the tank. She splashed a little on her face.

Wow, that made all the difference. You’re a vision.

She scowled, trying to ignore the insults from the voice in her head as she pulled the rest of her hair free from the braid and dunked it under the water. It was cold, and she didn’t have any shampoo, but at least it would get rid of the smell from those hideous blankets. She wrung it out, ran her fingers through the tangles, and pulled it back into a braid again. Still not perfect, but better at least.

She headed out of the bathroom, planning to go back and tell the others about the running water. Footsteps on the stairs to her right forced her to stop.

Well, crap.

Six biters were ascending the stairs toward her. Violet charged back down the hall, barreling into the room and slamming the door shut. The noise woke the others. Jack and Anna sat bolt upright, but Matt stayed horizontal and put one hand on his head, sighing.

“Zombies?”

His question was answered by hands pounding on the door. Jack hurried to help move the desk back in place.

Matt got to his feet.
